Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How heavy is a typical outdoor bench, because I’ll need to move it around my garden?

If you’re planning to move an outdoor bench around your garden, you’re smart to ask about weight first—trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way after dragging a concrete bench across my lawn and leaving a lovely trench behind. So, how heavy is a typical outdoor bench?

The short answer: It depends on the material, but most garden benches range from 30 to 200 pounds (13 to 90 kilograms). Let’s break it down so you can plan your moves without hurting your back or your grass.

Wooden Benches (30–80 lbs / 13–36 kg)

Lightweight wood like pine or eucalyptus makes a bench easy to lift and slide. For example, a standard two-seater wooden bench often weighs around 40–50 lbs. Heavier woods like teak or cedar add mass for durability, pushing toward 70–80 lbs. Great news: these are usually manageable for one or two people to drag short distances across grass or patio.

Metal Benches (40–100 lbs / 18–45 kg)

Wrought iron or steel benches look charming but pack a punch. A simple cast-iron bench might be 60–80 lbs, while a sturdier, decorative steel one can hit 100 lbs. The good news? Metal benches often have flat bases that slide more easily, but you’ll want a dolly or a helper if your garden has uneven terrain.

Stone or Concrete Benches (150–500+ lbs / 68–227+ kg)

Here’s where things get serious. A modest concrete bench can weigh 150–200 lbs, while a large stone slab bench might exceed 500 lbs. Honestly? Moving these around a garden by yourself is a recipe for a hernia. I’d recommend renting a furniture dolly with wide pneumatic wheels or even a small hand truck.

Plastic or Resin Benches (20–40 lbs / 9–18 kg)

The lightest option—perfect for re-arranging solo. Many resin benches are hollow or filled with lightweight foam, making them easy to carry. However, they might not withstand harsh weather unless UV-treated.

What Should You Do Before Moving?

- Check if the bench has removable parts (like seat slats or armrests) to reduce weight.

- Use a flat furniture slider or a piece of cardboard under legs for clean grass pulls.

- Always deadlift with your legs, not your back—or better yet, grab a rolling dolly.

In my experience, the most “move-friendly” bench is a medium-weight wooden one (around 50 lbs) with two people lifting. A steel bench with a truck might work for occasional rearrangement. Avoid stone benches unless you’re a bodybuilder—or you just really like permanent garden art.

So, weigh your options (pun intended). Pick a bench that fits your garden style and your lifting limits, and you’ll be swapping sunny spots with zero stress.
