Installing a permanent park bench requires a stable, level foundation. Here's how to know if your ground is level enough.
First, visually assess the area. Look for obvious slopes, mounds, or depressions. Water pooling after rain is a clear sign of low spots.
The most reliable method is using tools. A simple 4-foot carpenter's level and a long, straight board (like a 2x4) are highly effective. Place the board on the ground and set the level on top. Check in multiple directions—both along the proposed bench line and perpendicular to it. For larger areas, a string level or a laser level provides excellent accuracy. Measure from the string or laser line to the ground at several points; variations should be minimal.
What's "level enough"? For comfort and drainage, a very slight slope (about 1-2% away from the back) is actually ideal to prevent water from pooling under the seat. However, significant unevenness—typically more than a 1-inch difference over the length of the bench—can cause the bench to rock, stress its structure, and create a safety hazard.
If the ground isn't suitable, don't force it. Prepare the site by removing sod and loose soil. For minor irregularities, add or remove compactable gravel or sand, tamping it down firmly. For slopes, you may need to excavate a level terrace or consider installing concrete footings to create a stable, level base for the bench anchors.
