Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I stop my metal garden benches from squeaking?

That annoying squeak every time you sit on your garden bench can ruin a peaceful moment. Don't worry—fixing it is usually a quick and easy DIY job. First, identify the source. Carefully lift and gently rock the bench to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Most often, it's from metal-on-metal friction at the joints or where moving parts connect.

For a loose connection, grab a wrench or socket set and tighten any bolts, nuts, or screws you can find. Just be careful not to overtighten and strip the threads. If tightening doesn't work, the squeak is likely due to friction. This is where lubrication comes in. A silicone-based lubricant or a dry Teflon spray is ideal for outdoor furniture as it won't attract dirt and grime. Avoid using grease or oil for this reason. Apply the lubricant sparingly to the joints, hinges, and any points where metal parts rub together. Wipe away any excess.

For stubborn, rust-related squeaks, a penetrating oil like WD-40 can help loosen things up. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, work the joint back and forth, then wipe it clean. You can follow up with a dry lubricant for longer-lasting protection. To prevent the squeak from returning, make a habit of checking and tightening the hardware once or twice a year, and reapply lubricant as needed. With these simple steps, your metal bench will be quiet and comfortable once again.
