The most effective method uses a simple solution made from steel wool and vinegar. Soak a piece of fine steel wool in a jar of white vinegar for 24-48 hours. The acetic acid reacts with the iron, creating a solution that will stain the wood gray. First, ensure your bench is bare, untreated wood. Lightly sand it if needed. Apply the vinegar mixture with a brush or cloth, allowing it to dry completely between coats. The color will deepen with additional applications. Position the bench in a sunny, open area. Sunlight (UV rays) and rain will accelerate the natural bleaching and weathering process, helping to set the color and create an authentic, uneven finish. Over several weeks and months, your bench will develop a unique, beautiful gray character. For a faster result, you can also use a strong brewed black tea as a pre-treatment; the tannins in the tea react with the vinegar solution for a darker, more pronounced gray.
