Wondering if your patio or garden spot is ready for that new bench? Don't worry, you don't need professional tools to figure it out. Start with the simple "eyeball test." Step back and look at the area from different angles. Does it visibly slope? Place a large, flat board or the bench seat itself on the ground. Does it rock or wobble when you press on the corners? If it does, the ground is uneven.
For a more precise check, grab a spirit level. Place it on top of that flat board. The bubble in the vial should be centered between the lines. Check from side-to-side and front-to-back. No level? Try the "string line method." Hammer two stakes into the ground at each end of your bench's planned location. Tie a string tightly between them at the same height. Use a measuring tape to check the distance from the string down to the ground at several points. If the measurements vary, your ground isn't level.
If you find a slope, you have options. For minor unevenness, you can often adjust the bench's legs if it has adjustable feet. For a permanent spot, consider digging out high areas or adding paver base sand to low spots, tamping it down firmly. A gravel base can also help with drainage and leveling. Taking these few minutes to check ensures your bench is stable, safe, and won't wobble or tip when someone sits down.
