Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I stop wasps from building nests underneath my metal park benches?

It's frustrating to find wasps turning the space under your metal park bench into a construction site. Don't worry, you can reclaim your outdoor area with a few proactive and deterrent strategies. The key is to make the location undesirable for them before they start building.

First, focus on prevention. Wasps are attracted to sheltered, dry spots. Regularly inspect the underside of your benches, especially in early spring when queen wasps scout for nest sites. If you see the beginnings of a small, papery structure, knock it down immediately with a long stick or a powerful jet of water from a safe distance. For ongoing deterrence, consider applying natural repellents. Peppermint oil is a well-known wasp deterrent. Mix a few drops with water in a spray bottle and apply it to the underside of the bench frame every couple of weeks. You can also hang fake wasp nests nearby; wasps are territorial and typically avoid building close to another colony.

Next, make the environment less inviting. Keep the area around the benches clean of food crumbs, sugary spills, and open garbage, which attract wasps seeking food. Ensure any nearby trash cans have tight-fitting lids. If possible, reduce other attractants like bright floral patterns on nearby cushions or decorations.

For benches that already have an established nest, caution is paramount. If the nest is small and you are not allergic, you may treat it at dusk or dawn when wasps are less active using a commercial wasp spray with a long-range nozzle. Always follow the product instructions precisely and wear protective clothing. However, for large nests or if you are unsure, it is always safest to contact a professional pest control service. They have the expertise and equipment to remove the nest safely.

Finally, consider long-term solutions. You can physically block access by sealing gaps or openings in the bench's understructure with caulk or fine mesh wire, while ensuring proper drainage isn't blocked. Planting natural wasp-repellent plants like mint, eucalyptus, or wormwood near your seating area can also provide a gentle, ongoing deterrent.

By combining regular inspection, natural repellents, good sanitation, and physical barriers, you can effectively discourage wasps from setting up home under your metal benches and enjoy a peaceful outdoor space.
