It's frustrating to find new spider webs under your favorite outdoor benches every morning. The good news is, you can deter these eight-legged guests with some simple, effective strategies. The key is to make the area unappealing for them to settle.
First, cleanliness is your primary defense. Spiders are attracted to quiet, cluttered spaces where their insect prey might hide. Regularly sweep or vacuum under and around your benches to remove webs, dust, and debris. Pay special attention to corners and joints where webs often start. Keeping the general area free of other insects by managing outdoor lighting (using yellow bug lights) also reduces the spiders' food source.
Next, use natural repellents that spiders dislike. Peppermint oil, tea tree oil, or citrus-based sprays are excellent choices. Mix about 15-20 drops of essential oil with water and a bit of dish soap in a spray bottle. Shake well and thoroughly mist the underside of your benches, legs, and the surrounding area. Reapply this spray every week or after rain. You can also place cedar blocks or chips nearby, as many spiders avoid the scent.
For a more permanent physical barrier, consider applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly or a specialty insect barrier gel on the bench legs. Spiders have difficulty climbing on these slippery surfaces. Another great long-term solution is to wrap the legs with copper mesh or tape; it creates a slight charge that deters them.
Finally, make it a habit to inspect and gently disrupt potential web-building sites every few days with a broom or a long duster. Consistent disruption teaches spiders that this is not a stable home. By combining regular cleaning with natural repellents and physical barriers, you can enjoy your outdoor seating without the unwanted silk decorations.
