Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What's the best way to store cushions for outdoor benches when not in use?

So, your outdoor benches look fantastic with those comfy cushions, but now you need to store them. Maybe winter is coming, or a big storm is forecast. The key is to protect your investment from mold, mildew, and pests. Here’s the best way to do it, step by step.

First, always start with a thorough cleaning. Check the manufacturer's tag, but most outdoor cushions can be cleaned with a mild soap (like dish soap) and lukewarm water solution. Gently scrub the surface with a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt, pollen, and bird droppings. Rinse thoroughly with a hose or damp cloth. Never use harsh chemicals or a pressure washer, as this can damage the fabric and waterproof coating.

This next step is absolutely critical: let the cushions dry COMPLETELY. Even a little moisture trapped inside will lead to mold. Wipe off excess water and stand them on their edges or prop them up against a wall in a breezy, shaded spot. Sunshine helps, but direct, harsh sun for too long can fade fabrics. Flip them occasionally. This may take a full day or two—don't rush it.

Once bone-dry, you have storage options. The ideal spot is a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area like a garage, shed, or basement closet. Avoid damp cellars or hot attics. Do not store them in plastic bags or airtight bins, as this traps moisture. Instead, use breathable storage solutions.

For short-term or seasonal storage, place them flat on a high shelf or in a large, ventilated storage bag designed for outdoor cushions. You can also use old cotton pillowcases or canvas bags. For long-term storage, consider a large plastic storage bin with the lid slightly ajar or with ventilation holes drilled in it. Placing a moisture-absorbing desiccant packet (like silica gel) inside can provide extra protection.

A great tip is to avoid stacking too many cushions high, as this can deform the filling over time. Store them flat or upright. Finally, before you put them out next season, give them another quick airing out in the sun to ensure they are fresh and ready for use. Following these simple steps will keep your outdoor bench cushions looking great and comfortable for years to come.
