Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I stop wasps from building nests under the seats of my outdoor benches?

Discovering a wasp nest under your outdoor bench can turn a relaxing space into a danger zone. Don't worry—stopping these stinging insects is manageable with the right approach. First, understand that wasps seek sheltered, dry spots. The underside of a bench seat is perfect for them. Your strategy should focus on prevention, deterrence, and safe removal.

Start with prevention. Conduct a thorough inspection of your benches in early spring, before queen wasps become active. Seal any cracks, gaps, or openings in the bench frame with caulk or steel wool. Wasps can exploit the tiniest entry points. Consider applying a preventative spray or coating. A mixture of water and dish soap sprayed in the area can deter initial construction. For a longer-lasting solution, some gardeners recommend spraying a mix of peppermint oil and water, as wasps dislike the scent.

Make the area inhospitable. Wasps are attracted to certain smells and food sources. Keep your outdoor dining area impeccably clean. Avoid leaving sweet drinks, fallen fruit, or food scraps near your benches. You can also hang fake wasp nests nearby; wasps are territorial and often avoid building close to another colony.

If you find a small, new nest (about the size of a golf ball), you can deal with it immediately. At night or very early morning when wasps are inactive, wear protective clothing, including long sleeves, pants, gloves, and a face veil. Use a wasp spray designed for long-range application or douse the nest thoroughly with a soapy water solution (2 tablespoons of dish soap per quart of water). This coats their wings and suffocates them. Remove the nest debris and seal the area afterward.

For large or established nests, do not attempt removal yourself. Contact a professional pest control service. Their expertise ensures safe, complete eradication.

Finally, maintain your defenses. Regularly inspect your benches every few weeks during warm months. Reapply natural repellent sprays after rain. By being proactive and consistent, you can reclaim your outdoor seating area and enjoy it without the unwelcome buzz of wasps building a home beneath you.
