Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I treat new cedar outdoor benches to maintain that beautiful red color?

That gorgeous, rich red hue of new cedar is one of its biggest selling points. To maintain that color and protect your investment, you need to act quickly and use the right products. Cedar's natural red tones come from tannins and oils that fade when exposed to sunlight and weather. The key is to apply a protective treatment that contains a UV inhibitor soon after installation.

First, ensure your bench is clean and completely dry. For the best color preservation, use a penetrating oil formulated specifically for cedar, often labeled as "cedar tone" or "redwood finish." These oils contain pigments that enhance the natural red color while nourishing the wood. Apply generously with a brush or rag, following the wood grain. Allow it to soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess to prevent a sticky surface.

For longer-lasting protection, follow the initial oil treatment with a clear, UV-resistant exterior wood sealant. Apply a thin, even coat. This combination—pigmented oil followed by a UV sealant—creates a barrier against the sun's fading rays while keeping the wood hydrated.

Reapply a fresh coat of oil every 12-18 months, or whenever the wood appears dry and the color starts to dull. Regular maintenance is far easier than trying to restore gray, weathered wood later. With consistent care, you can enjoy your bench's warm, red beauty for years to come.
