The first and most crucial step is choosing the right material from the start. Opt for inherently rust-resistant metals like aluminum, stainless steel (specifically grade 316 for marine environments), or galvanized steel. If you have existing iron or steel benches, all is not lost. A high-quality protective coating is your best defense. Thoroughly remove any existing rust with a wire brush or sandblaster, then apply a rust-inhibitive primer followed by a durable topcoat like marine-grade enamel or a specialized epoxy paint. For added protection, consider powder coating, which creates a harder, more uniform shield than traditional paint. Regular maintenance is non-negotiable. Establish a schedule to rinse benches with fresh water weekly to remove salt deposits. Inspect them bi-annually for any chips or scratches in the coating, and touch them up immediately to prevent moisture from reaching the bare metal. For wooden benches, use stainless steel or galvanized hardware.
