Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

My garden benches gets really hot in the summer—are there materials that stay cooler?

If your garden bench turns into a scorching hot seat every summer, you're not alone. The good news is that some materials are far better at staying cool and comfortable under the blazing sun. The key is choosing options with low thermal conductivity and light colors that reflect rather than absorb heat.

For the coolest experience, consider aluminum benches. Aluminum has high thermal conductivity, meaning it dissipates heat quickly. A light-colored aluminum bench will feel noticeably cooler than dark wood or wrought iron. Modern composite wood or polymer resin benches are another excellent choice. These engineered materials don't absorb as much heat as traditional stone or solid wood, and they often come in light, heat-reflective colors.

Avoid solid materials with high thermal mass like dark stone, concrete, or dark-stained wood, as they absorb and retain heat for hours. If you love the look of wood, opt for light-colored teak or acacia, and place your bench in dappled shade. Adding a removable cushion or breathable fabric cover during peak sun hours can also make a world of difference.

Ultimately, pairing a smart material choice with strategic placement is your best defense. A light-colored aluminum or composite bench positioned under a tree or pergola will provide a comfortable, cool retreat all season long.
