Wondering if your spot is ready for that new garden bench? A wobbly bench is no fun. Don't worry, checking for level ground is easier than you think. You don't always need fancy tools.
First, trust your eyes and feet. Place the bench where you want it. Sit on it. Does it rock or feel unstable? Walk around the area. Do you see any obvious slopes or dips? Your body is a great first detector.
For a more precise check, use a simple carpenter's level. Place it lengthwise along the bench seat once the bench is in position. Look at the bubble in the vial. If it's centered between the lines, you're level! Check from side to side and front to back. A smartphone with a level app can also work in a pinch.
No level? Try the water test. Place a shallow, clear baking dish or tray on the bench seat. Fill it with about an inch of water. If the water depth is even all around, your bench is sitting level. If one side has significantly deeper water, the ground is sloped there.
What if the ground is uneven? For minor issues, you can often adjust the bench legs. Some benches have adjustable feet. For fixed legs, use flat stones, patio pavers, or composite shims under the legs to stabilize it. For major slopes, you may need to dig out the high side or add soil to the low side to create a more level base before placing your bench.
Taking these few minutes to check will ensure your bench is a stable, relaxing retreat for years to come. Now, go enjoy your perfectly placed garden spot!
