Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I'm worried about splinters on wooden garden benches—is there a treatment for that?

That worry is completely understandable! A splintered garden bench can turn a relaxing retreat into a hazard. The good news is, treating it is a straightforward DIY project. First, assess the damage. For minor splinters, start by sanding the entire bench surface thoroughly. Use medium-grit sandpaper (like 80-100 grit) to level the area, then progress to a fine grit (150-220) for a silky-smooth finish. Always sand along the wood grain to avoid scratches. After sanding, vacuum all dust and wipe the wood with a damp cloth. The crucial next step is applying a protective sealant. For outdoor benches, use a high-quality exterior-grade wood sealant, polyurethane, or spar varnish. Apply multiple thin coats according to the product directions, sanding lightly between coats. This sealant acts as a barrier against moisture, which causes wood to swell and crack, leading to splinters. To prevent future splinters, reapply a fresh coat of sealant every year or two. Consider using a protective bench cover during harsh weather. With this simple maintenance, your wooden bench will remain a smooth, safe, and beautiful spot for years to come.
