Seeing green or black spots on your wooden bench? Don't worry – mold on outdoor wood is common and fixable. Here’s your practical guide to tackling it.
First, safety first! Put on gloves and a mask. For light mold, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray thoroughly, let sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. For stubborn mold, use a solution of 1 cup bleach, 1 gallon of water, and a squirt of dish soap. Apply, scrub after 15 minutes, and rinse completely. Never mix bleach with vinegar!
The real secret is prevention. After cleaning, let the wood dry completely for at least 48 hours of sunny weather. Then, apply a high-quality water-repellent sealant, wood stain, or outdoor-rated spar urethane. Pay extra attention to end grains and undersides. Reapply this protective finish every 1-2 years.
Make maintenance a habit. Keep benches clear of wet leaves and debris. If possible, store them under cover in winter or during long rainy spells. For benches that stay out, consider using a breathable waterproof cover. A quick weekly wipe-down can prevent moisture buildup.
With regular cleaning and proactive sealing, your wooden benches can stay beautiful, mold-free, and ready for relaxation for many seasons to come.
