Iron outdoor benches are classic and durable, but they do require some regular care to keep them looking their best and to prevent rust. The maintenance is straightforward and largely seasonal. Here’s what you need to know.
The primary enemy of iron benches is rust. The key to prevention is keeping the protective finish intact. Start with regular cleaning. Every few months, or at least seasonally, wash the bench with a mild soap and water solution using a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt, bird droppings, and pollen that can trap moisture. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely.
Inspect the bench periodically, especially in spring and fall. Look for any chips, scratches, or bubbles in the paint or powder coating. These are spots where rust can begin. If you find a small area of surface rust, tackle it immediately. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to scrub away the rust completely until you see bare, shiny metal. Wipe away any dust.
Once the area is clean and dry, apply a rust-inhibiting primer designed for metal. After the primer dries, touch up the spot with a matching exterior-grade paint. For benches with a clear coat or a wrought iron finish, use a matching metal sealant.
For overall protection, applying a fresh coat of automotive wax or a specialized furniture wax once a year can provide an excellent moisture barrier. This step is simple and highly effective.
During harsh winter months or prolonged rainy seasons, if possible, move the bench to a covered area like a garage or shed. If that’s not feasible, consider a waterproof cover, but ensure the bench is completely dry before covering it to avoid trapping moisture.
