Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What's the best thing to do with garden benches during a hailstorm?

When dark clouds gather and the forecast warns of hail, your garden benches become vulnerable. Hailstones can dent metal, crack wood, and shatter composite materials. So, what's the best thing to do? Acting quickly is key.

First, if time allows, move lightweight benches into a garage, shed, or under a sturdy roof. This is the most effective protection. For heavy, fixed benches, use thick, padded furniture covers or moving blankets. Secure them tightly with ropes or bungee cords to prevent wind from whipping them away.

No specialized covers? Improvise! Use old comforters, carpets, or even several layers of cardboard. Top it with a waterproof tarp or heavy-duty plastic sheeting, ensuring it's weighted down. Avoid thin tarps alone, as they offer little cushioning against impact.

For a semi-permanent solution, consider constructing a simple, slanted plywood shield that can be leaned against the bench when needed. This deflects hailstones. Remember, your safety comes first. Never risk injury during a severe storm. If the hail is already falling, it's too late to go outside.

After the storm, inspect benches for damage. Promptly sand and seal any fresh wood wounds to prevent moisture rot. A little preparation can save your beloved outdoor furniture from costly hail damage, ensuring many more seasons of peaceful relaxation.
