For cooling, subsurface ventilation systems or materials with phase-change properties that absorb heat are emerging technologies.
Regular maintenance preserves these properties. Sealing wood protects its insulating qualities, and cleaning reflective surfaces maintains their effectiveness. Ultimately, the goal is to select materials and designs that naturally mitigate temperature extremes, creating welcoming public spaces that encourage community interaction in all seasons.
