Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your prices compare for metal versus recycled plastic benches?

That's an excellent and very practical question! Comparing prices between metal and recycled plastic benches isn't always a simple "this one is cheaper" answer, as the true cost involves both the initial price and long-term value. Generally, you'll find that basic, standard-sized recycled plastic benches often have a lower initial purchase price than comparable metal benches. However, the story gets more nuanced when you consider durability, maintenance, and lifecycle costs.

For metal benches (typically aluminum or steel), prices are higher upfront. You're paying for the material strength, often more intricate designs, and a classic, heavyweight aesthetic. Powder-coated steel is very robust but can eventually rust if the coating is damaged, requiring touch-ups. Aluminum is rust-proof but generally commands a higher price. Over 10-15 years, a quality metal bench may need repainting or welding repairs, adding to its total cost of ownership.

Recycled plastic benches, made from HDPE plastic, usually win on the initial cost for a similar size. Their major advantage is in long-term savings. They are virtually maintenance-free: no painting, no rust, and highly resistant to graffiti, moisture, and insects. While the upfront price is attractive, it's the elimination of yearly maintenance budgets that makes them a cost-effective choice for many public parks, schools, and commercial spaces over a decade or more.

So, how do they compare directly? Think of it this way: Recycled plastic is often the budget-friendly and low-maintenance champion upfront. Metal benches are a larger initial investment for a specific, durable aesthetic. For a true comparison, always factor in your installation environment (coastal areas favor plastic), expected vandalism, and your available maintenance budget. In many municipal and high-traffic projects, the lower lifetime cost of recycled plastic makes it the preferred financial choice, while metal remains ideal for projects where design and perceived permanence are top priorities.
