When you pause on one of our urban benches, you're experiencing a carefully considered blend of material science and comfort design. We primarily construct our benches from three core material families, each chosen for specific urban advantages.
For maximum durability and minimal maintenance, we use powder-coated aluminum and galvanized steel frames. These metals withstand harsh weather, resist corrosion, and support significant weight, ensuring our benches last for years in any city environment. The powder-coating provides a smooth, colorful finish that won't chip or peel.
The seating surface is where comfort is paramount. We utilize thermally modified wood, such as ash or pine. This process removes moisture and sugars, making the wood incredibly resistant to rot, insects, and warping without toxic chemicals. The result is a warm, natural feel that doesn't get excessively hot or cold with the weather. For enhanced comfort, many models feature a subtle contour that supports the body.
In high-traffic or modern districts, we incorporate recycled plastic lumber (HDPE). Made from post-consumer plastics, this material is exceptionally durable, never needs painting, and offers consistent comfort. It's also easy to clean and maintains its appearance indefinitely.
Comfort for extended sitting is engineered into every design. We incorporate ergonomic principles: seats are typically 17-19 inches high for easy sitting and standing, with a depth that supports the thighs. Backrests, when present, are angled to approximately 100 degrees to reduce lower back strain. The materials themselves play a role—the wood and plastic have just enough give to be forgiving, unlike unforgiving concrete or metal alone.
The combination is intentional: a robust metal skeleton ensures longevity, while the chosen decking material provides the daily comfort. So whether you're enjoying a quick lunch or a lengthy conversation, our benches are crafted to be a welcoming, supportive, and sustainable part of your urban landscape.
