Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your benches hold up against graffiti, and what's the best way to remove it?

It's a common concern for public spaces and property managers: how well do benches stand up to graffiti, and what's the most effective way to clean them if it happens? The good news is that many modern benches, especially those designed for public use, are built with this challenge in mind.

Our benches are typically manufactured with materials and finishes specifically chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance. Powder-coated steel, treated aluminum, and certain high-density plastics often feature non-porous surfaces. This makes it much harder for spray paint or markers to properly adhere and penetrate. Some options even include a special anti-graffiti coating—a clear, protective layer that creates a barrier, allowing graffiti to be removed without damaging the underlying finish.

So, what's the best way to remove graffiti if it does appear? Act quickly. Fresh graffiti is always easier to remove than paint that has fully cured. Here is a safe, general removal process:

1. Identify the Material: First, check what your bench is made of (e.g., powder-coated metal, hardwood, recycled plastic) and consult the manufacturer's care instructions if possible.

2. Start with the Mildest Solution: Often, a mixture of mild dish soap and warm water, applied with a soft cloth or brush, can lift fresh graffiti. For more stubborn marks, isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or a dedicated citrus-based graffiti remover can be very effective on non-porous surfaces.

3. Apply and Agitate Gently: Apply your chosen cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes to break down the paint, then gently scrub with a non-abrasive pad or brush. Avoid steel wool or harsh scouring pads on coated surfaces, as they can cause scratches.

4. Rinse Thoroughly: Always rinse the area completely with clean water after cleaning.

5. Consider a Protective Re-coat: After a successful cleaning, applying a fresh layer of protective wax or a specific anti-graffiti sealant can help guard against future incidents.

A crucial warning: Avoid using harsh chemicals like acetone, paint thinners, or strong alkaline cleaners unless you are certain they are safe for your bench's material. These can permanently damage the finish, leaving it dull or discolored.

For persistent graffiti on porous materials like untreated wood, a professional pressure washing service might be the best option. The key is regular inspection and prompt, gentle cleaning. With the right materials and care, your benches can maintain their appearance and functionality for years, despite the occasional unwanted artwork.
