Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I see some benches have slats and some are solid; which is better for drainage?

That's an excellent and practical question! When choosing an outdoor bench, the choice between slatted and solid seating surfaces significantly impacts drainage, maintenance, and longevity. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide which is better for your needs.

For drainage alone, benches with slats are unequivocally superior. The gaps between the slats allow rainwater to pass through immediately. Water doesn’t accumulate on the seat; it simply falls to the ground below. This rapid drying minimizes the time the wood is in contact with moisture, which is the primary enemy of outdoor furniture. It helps prevent rot, mold, and mildew.

A solid bench seat, while often offering a sleek, modern look, acts like a basin. Water pools on its surface and must evaporate or run off the edges. This means the wood remains wet for much longer, accelerating weathering and increasing the risk of water seeping into joints and cracks. Without perfect sealing and a slight tilt for runoff, solid seats are prone to water damage.

However, drainage isn't the only factor. Slatted benches allow better air circulation underneath, further promoting drying. They are also lighter and often more comfortable in hot weather as air can circulate around the sitter. On the other hand, a well-designed solid bench made from rot-resistant species like teak or high-quality plastic polymer can still be durable, but it requires more proactive maintenance, such as ensuring sealed seams and occasional re-oiling.

So, which is better?

If your primary concerns are low maintenance, optimal drainage, and classic garden durability, a slatted bench is the clear winner. It’s the most practical choice for wet climates or for benches that will remain in place year-round.

Choose a solid bench if design aesthetics are a top priority, you don't mind more frequent maintenance, or the bench will be used under a covered patio or pergola where direct rain exposure is limited. Always ensure it has a slight pitch to shed water.

Ultimately, for a worry-free outdoor bench that handles rain beautifully, the slatted design is the functionally superior option.
