The good news is that most standard benches, especially those designed for residential or park use, do not require a complex concrete foundation or deep footings for installation. The need largely depends on the bench's material, design, intended use, and your local ground conditions.
For the vast majority of installations, what you truly need is a stable, level, and well-drained surface. This can often be achieved by preparing a base of compacted gravel or pavers on level ground. This method provides excellent drainage, prevents frost heave in colder climates, and offers a solid seat for your bench's legs or base.
However, there are important exceptions. Permanent benches in public spaces, heavy stone or concrete benches, or benches in very windy areas may benefit from being anchored. This doesn't always mean pouring concrete. Many benches come with ground anchors or mounting plates that can be secured with concrete into a small hole or attached to an existing concrete slab. This prevents tipping and theft.
