Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I clean gum and other sticky substances off the benches?

Dealing with gum or other sticky substances on your bench can be frustrating, but it's a common problem with simple solutions. First, for fresh gum, hardening it is key. Apply an ice cube in a plastic bag directly to the gum for several minutes until it becomes brittle. Once hardened, use a blunt tool like a butter knife or a plastic scraper to gently lift and peel the bulk of it away. For older, dried residues or other sticky substances like tape or candy, applying a common household solvent is effective. Rubbing alcohol, cooking oil, or a mild citrus-based cleaner can break down the adhesive. Apply a small amount to a clean cloth and dab it onto the sticky spot, letting it sit for a few minutes to penetrate. Then, gently scrub the area in a circular motion. Avoid harsh scraping that could damage the bench's finish. After the substance is removed, wash the entire area with warm, soapy water to eliminate any remaining cleaner or oily film. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a towel. For wooden benches, consider applying a protective sealant periodically to prevent future stains and make cleanup easier. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to spills will keep your benches looking clean and welcoming for years to come.
