Cast iron benches are beloved for their classic beauty and durability, but they do require regular maintenance to stay looking their best and to prevent rust. Here’s your practical guide to keeping them in top shape.
The cornerstone of maintenance is regular cleaning. Use a mild soap and water solution with a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt, bird droppings, and pollen. Avoid harsh abrasives or wire brushes that can scratch the protective finish. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft towel to prevent water spots.
Rust is the main enemy. If you spot early, superficial rust, tackle it immediately. Use fine steel wool or a specialized rust remover pad. For stubborn spots, a commercial rust dissolver can be effective. Always wear gloves and follow product instructions. After removal, clean the area again.
The most critical step is applying a protective coating. Once the bench is completely clean and bone-dry, apply a fresh coat of wax, specialized metal sealant, or paint. Wax (like automotive paste wax) provides a good barrier for finished benches. For a more robust shield, use a clear exterior-grade metal lacquer or a rust-inhibitive primer followed by outdoor-rated paint. This creates a barrier against moisture.
Seasonal care is wise. In harsh winter climates, if possible, move the bench to a sheltered location like a garage or shed. If it must stay outside, consider a protective cover.
