Installing a heavy stone bench requires careful planning and proper execution to ensure safety, stability, and longevity. Unlike lightweight furniture, these permanent fixtures demand a solid foundation. The primary requirement is a level and stable site. Begin by excavating the area to a depth of at least 6-8 inches, extending it 6 inches wider than the bench footprint on all sides. This space is for a compacted base layer, typically consisting of 4-6 inches of crushed stone or gravel, which provides critical drainage and prevents frost heave in colder climates. For ultimate stability, especially for very heavy or long benches, pouring a concrete footing is highly recommended. The bench must then be securely anchored to this base. This can involve setting the legs into wet concrete, using masonry anchors into a cured slab, or employing heavy-duty stainless steel brackets. Always use a level during placement to ensure the bench is perfectly even. Consider drainage paths to avoid water pooling, and for public or high-traffic areas, consult local building codes.
