Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How sustainable is the manufacturing process for your benches?

When you ask about the sustainability of our bench manufacturing process, I want to be as transparent as a sunny day in the park. Let me walk you through it, piece by piece.

First, the materials. We source most of our steel from suppliers that use a high percentage of recycled content—often 70% to 90%. This cuts down the carbon footprint dramatically compared to virgin steel. For the wood slats on our benches, we partner with FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) mills. That means every board comes from responsibly managed forests where new trees are planted for every one harvested. For our composite options, the plastic content is actually reclaimed ocean-bound waste, processed into durable, weather-resistant planks.

Now, the factory floor itself. Our main production facility runs on solar panels—enough to cover roughly 60% of our energy needs during peak sunlight hours. The remaining power comes from a local grid that is transitioning toward renewables. We use high-efficiency LED lighting and motion sensors to avoid wasted electricity. During welding and cutting, our filtration systems capture metal dust and fumes, which are then recycled back into the supply chain. Even the water used for cooling is recirculated in a closed-loop system, so we don’t pour a drop down the drain.

What about that powder coating finish? It’s a low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) powder that creates zero solvent emissions during application. Overspray is collected and reused, so there’s virtually no waste. And once a bench is assembled, we wrap it in reusable fabric covers instead of single-use plastic film. If a customer really needs plastic protection, it’s made from 100% post-consumer recycled material.

But here’s the real kicker: we design these benches to last. A well-maintained steel and wood bench can serve for 20 to 25 years. That longevity itself is a huge sustainability win—less frequent replacement means fewer resources consumed over time. When a bench finally does reach the end of its life, the steel can be infinitely recycled, and the wood can be composted or repurposed.

Of course, nothing is perfect. We still rely on trucking for delivery, which burns diesel. To offset that, we plant a tree for every bench sold through a certified reforestation program. And we’re actively experimenting with electric delivery vans for local routes.

So, to answer your question honestly: yes, our process is genuinely sustainable in practice, not just in marketing. It’s about continuous improvement—using less energy, choosing better materials, and making sure every bench leaves a lighter footprint. If you’d ever like a tour of the factory floor, we’d be happy to show you the details.
