Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How resistant are the wooden slats on your benches to rotting or warping?

That’s a really practical question, and I’m glad you’re thinking about long-term durability. The short answer is: our benches are designed to be highly resistant to both rotting and warping, but like all natural materials, they need a bit of care to stay that way.

First, let’s talk about the wood itself. We don’t use just any lumber. Our wooden slats are crafted from kiln-dried hardwoods—specifically species like Teak, Ipe, or pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine. Teak and Ipe are naturally dense and packed with natural oils, making them incredibly resistant to moisture, fungi, and insect damage. If you’ve ever seen a teak deck on a boat, you’ll know it can handle rain, sun, and saltwater for years. For our more affordable models, we use pressure-treated pine, which has been infused with preservatives deep into the wood fibers. This treatment dramatically slows down rot, even when the bench is left out in damp soil or rainy climates.

Second, warping is tackled through both wood selection and construction. Warping happens when wood dries unevenly. All our slats are kiln-dried to a specific moisture content (around 6-8%) before assembly. This pre-shrinking process stabilizes the wood, so it’s less likely to twist or cup after you place it outside. Additionally, we use stainless steel or galvanized screws (not just nails) and leave small gaps between slats. These gaps allow for natural expansion and contraction, as well as quick drainage, which prevents water from pooling and being absorbed—a major cause of warping and surface rot.

Finally, the finishing layer matters. Every bench comes with a factory-applied, UV-resistant exterior sealant or stain. This creates a protective barrier that repels water and filters out the sun’s harsh rays. Without a seal, UV exposure can break down the wood’s lignin, leading to a grey, brittle surface and eventual cracking. Our sealant helps keep the wood feeling solid and looking rich.

However, a quick reality check: no untreated wood is 100% immune. If you live in an extremely humid climate or frequently hose down the bench, you might notice minor surface checking (small cracks) after a year or two. That’s the wood breathing, not failing. To maximize resistance, I recommend re-applying a sealant every 12-18 months. It’s a simple wipe-on job that will keep those slats rot-free and straight for a decade or more.

In short, with the right materials and a tiny bit of maintenance, you can trust these slats to hold up beautifully. Would you like a specific recommendation for your local climate?
