Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Is the wood on your benches treated to resist insect damage?

Great question! The short answer is: it depends on the bench you own and where you bought it. Many outdoor benches, especially those made of pine or fir, are often treated with chemical preservatives to resist insect damage, decay, and moisture. However, not all benches are created equal.

For example, pressure-treated lumber (usually greenish in color) is common for commercial park benches or DIY outdoor projects. This wood is infused with chemicals like copper azole or alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ), which deter termites, carpenter ants, and fungi. On the other hand, naturally durable woods like cedar, redwood, or teak contain their own natural oils that repel insects without chemical treatment—though they still benefit from occasional sealing.

If you’re buying a bench, check the product description. Many manufacturers explicitly state if the wood is “treated for ground contact” or “weather-resistant.” If it’s from a budget retailer, the wood may only be surface-stained, offering little insect protection. Over time, even treated wood can lose its effectiveness if the surface is cut, drilled, or exposed to harsh weather.

For existing benches, you can test by looking for small holes, sawdust, or tunnels—signs of insect activity. As a proactive step, apply a wood preservative or insecticidal sealant annually. My recommendation? If you live in a damp or termite-prone area, choose a bench made from naturally rot-resistant wood or pressure-treated lumber. And always keep the bench off direct ground contact to reduce moisture and pest access.

So, is your bench treated? Check the label, look for greenish tints (pressure-treated), or feel the wood’s weight—treated wood is often denser and heavier. If in doubt, a simple borate-based treatment applied by yourself can add protection without harsh chemicals.

Stay curious, and your bench can look great for years!
