We don’t use cheap, untreated wood that cracks and splinters over time. Instead, our benches are made from either high-density polyethylene (HDPE) recycled lumber, powder-coated aluminum, or premium cedar with a special sealant. For the wooden models, we sand every surface multiple times and apply a marine-grade varnish that seals the fibers. This prevents moisture from getting in and causing those nasty little splinters.
For our most popular commercial-grade benches, we use HDPE, which is essentially a plastic-wood composite. It never splinters, never rots, and you can run your hand over it without any fear of getting a sliver. Even after years of sun and rain, the surface stays smooth. I’ve personally tested them by rubbing the edge with my palm—no issues at all.
Of course, no material is 100% indestructible. If someone drags a sharp object across the bench or chips it with a hammer, you could get a rough edge.
