Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do we maintain the color on powder-coated benches over time?

If you’ve invested in a powder-coated bench, you already know it’s a durable choice for outdoor furniture. The coating is tough and resistant to chipping, but over time, sun, rain, and dirt can dull its color. So, how do we maintain that fresh, vibrant look? It’s simpler than you think. First, regular cleaning is your best friend. Once a month, rinse the bench with water and gently scrub it with a soft sponge and mild soap (like dish soap mixed with water). Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads—they can scratch the coating and strip the color. Rinse thoroughly afterward to prevent soap residue from building up.

Next, protect it from the sun. Even the best powder coating can fade under intense UV rays. If possible, place your bench in a shaded area or use a breathable cover when it’s not in use. Covers block sunlight and keep moisture at bay, which also prevents mildew. For extra protection, apply a UV-resistant wax or sealant designed for powder-coated surfaces twice a year—once before summer and once before winter. This adds a thin layer that deflects UV damage and keeps colors from turning chalky.

Watch out for scratches and chips. If you notice a small scratch or a spot where the coating has worn away, touch it up quickly. Use a color-matched powder coating spray or a touch-up pen from the manufacturer. Clean the area first, then apply a thin layer. Let it dry fully before using the bench. This stops rust from forming underneath and keeps the color uniform. Also, avoid placing metal objects or rough furniture pads that can scrape the surface.

Finally, consider the environment. If you live in a coastal area, salt spray can accelerate fading. Rinse the bench with fresh water after stormy or salty days. In snowy climates, clear off heavy snow gently with a soft broom—don’t scrape it. And during prolonged rain, tilt the bench or add rubber feet to prevent water pooling on the legs. By combining routine cleaning, UV shields, quick repairs, and smart placement, your powder-coated bench will stay brilliant for many seasons. A little care goes a long way in preserving its finish and your enjoyment.
