Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do you recommend we secure the benches if we can't bolt them to concrete?

If you cannot bolt your benches to concrete, don’t worry—there are several effective, non-permanent solutions that keep seating stable and safe. The key is to anchor the bench using weight, friction, or ground penetration.

First, consider ground spikes or auger anchors. These are metal rods that screw into soil or grass. Many benches have pre-drilled holes in their legs; simply insert a spike through each leg and twist it into the ground. This works best on lawns, parks, or gardens. For hard surfaces like patios or decking, use concrete ballast boxes—plastic or metal containers that you fill with sand or gravel. Place one box under each bench leg, or use a single long box under the entire seat. The weight alone prevents tipping.

Another option is heavy-duty sandbags or water weights. You can place 20–30 lb sandbags directly over the bench’s bottom frame or inside a fabric sleeve that wraps around the legs. This is ideal for temporary setups like event seating. Alternatively, interlocking rubber pavers with a high friction surface can be placed under the bench legs; the rubber grips the ground and stops sliding.

For a cleaner look, use precast concrete blocks with slots that accept the bench legs. These are like heavy “feet” that you can easily move with a dolly but are too heavy for wind to shift. If the bench is on wooden decking, consider L-brackets screwed into the deck boards—this avoids concrete while still being secure.

Finally, always test stability by pushing the bench from different angles. For high-traffic public areas, combine two methods—for example, ground spikes plus a small ballast box. Remember that no solution is truly “one size fits all.” The best choice depends on your surface type, bench weight, and how much movement you expect.

I hope these ideas help you keep your benches steady without a drop of concrete. Feel free to ask if you need more specific recommendations for your project!
