We’ve all felt that shock of sitting on a metal or dark wooden bench after it’s been baking under the sun all afternoon. The heat can be uncomfortable and even painful, but with a few smart tricks, you can keep your bench cool and enjoyable. Here’s what works:
First, choose materials wisely. Light-colored wood (like cedar or pine) and recycled plastic lumber absorb far less heat than dark metals. If you already have a metal bench, consider adding a breathable seat cushion made of canvas or mesh. These fabrics don’t trap heat and allow air to circulate around your body.
Second, create natural shade. A simple way is to place the bench under a tree, a pergola, or a large umbrella. If that’s not possible, installing a tensioned shade sail directly above the bench can block up to 90% of UV rays. The shade not only cools the seat but also lowers the surrounding air temperature by several degrees.
Third, try reflective or heat-deflecting coatings. Some outdoor furniture sealants now include UV-reflective additives.
