First, the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) sets specific guidelines for benches in public areas, especially those along accessible routes. Here are the key compliance points we follow:
Seat Height
The seat surface must be between 17 and 19 inches above the ground. This height makes it easier for people using wheelchairs or with limited mobility to transfer onto the bench. Our standard models are set at 18 inches, right in the middle of the range.
Armrests
At least one armrest must be provided on each side of the bench—or at the end of a continuous row. This helps users push themselves up or stabilize when sitting down. Our benches include sturdy, ergonomic armrests that support that need.
Ground Surface
The bench must be placed on a firm, stable, slip-resistant surface. And there needs to be enough clear space (at least 30x48 inches) next to the bench for a wheelchair to pull up alongside. We provide installation guidelines to ensure that.
Back Support
While not strictly required for every bench, we recommend benches with backrests for comfort and support. All our models come with back support as standard.
Reach and Clearance
If you need to operate any part of the bench (like a folding seat), controls must be within 48 inches of the ground. For side reaches, it’s 54 inches max.
