Next, inspect for rust. If you spot small orange specks, act fast. Light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (220-grit works well) will remove surface rust. Follow up by wiping the area with a rag dampened with mineral spirits, then apply a metal primer and a coat of outdoor paint designed for iron. Winter storage is critical if you live in a cold climate. If possible, move the bench indoors to a garage or shed. If that’s not an option, cover it with a breathable, waterproof cover (not plastic, which traps condensation). Ensure the bench is clean and completely dry before covering.
For older benches with heavy rust or loose joints, you may need to disassemble and restore it entirely. Use a wire brush drill attachment to strip old paint, then rinse and dry. Treat with a rust converter, prime, and repaint. Re-tighten bolts and apply a lubricant like WD-40 to moving parts.
