Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do we maintain the finish on powder-coated benches over time?

If you own powder-coated benches, you already know how durable and attractive they are. Unlike regular paint, the powder coating process bakes a hard, plastic-like shell onto the metal, making it resistant to chipping, fading, and corrosion. But even the toughest finish needs a little love over time. Here’s how to keep your benches looking like new season after season.

Start with gentle, regular cleaning. The number one enemy of a powder-coated finish is dirt and grime that holds moisture. I recommend wiping down your bench every few weeks with a soft cloth or sponge dipped in mild soapy water. Avoid harsh detergents like bleach or citrus-based cleaners—they can slowly eat away the coating’s protective layer. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose, and dry the bench with a soft towel to prevent water spots.

Be mindful of scratches and chips. No finish is bulletproof. If you move the bench around, lift it rather than dragging it, which can scrape the coating against concrete. If a small chip appears, don’t panic. You can touch it up with a high-quality automotive touch-up paint that matches the color, or use a special powder-coat repair kit. Clean the area first, apply a thin layer of paint, and let it cure fully. This simple action stops rust from spreading under the coating.

Protect the bench from extreme weather whenever possible. Powder coating is UV-resistant, but years of direct sun can still cause fading. If your bench is in a hot, sunny spot, consider using a breathable outdoor furniture cover during the off-season or when it’s not in use. For coastal environments, salt spray is especially corrosive—rinse the bench with fresh water after any exposure to salty air or sea breezes.

Apply a protective wax or sealant annually. After a thorough cleaning, you can buff on a thin layer of automotive-grade carnauba wax or a dedicated metal-sealant product. This adds an extra barrier against moisture and UV rays, and it makes future cleaning much easier. Just apply the wax with a microfiber cloth, let it haze, and buff it off. The bench will get a subtle, shiny glow that lasts for months.

Finally, inspect the bench twice a year. Lift the bench or tilt it to check the underside of the legs and the mounting points where water might collect. Look for tiny rust spots or blisters in the coating. If you find any, address them immediately with a light sanding and touch-up paint. A little effort now can save you from having to repaint the entire bench later.

Maintaining a powder-coated bench is really just about consistent, gentle care. With these simple steps, your bench will stay vibrant, smooth, and rust-free for many years, always ready for a quiet morning coffee or a sunny afternoon read.
