Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I need a park bench that doesn’t get scorching hot in the sun—what materials should I avoid?

If you’re looking for a park bench that doesn’t turn into a frying pan under the summer sun, you’re on the right track. Sitting on a scorching-hot seat is uncomfortable and can even burn your skin. The key is choosing the right material—and just as important, knowing which ones to steer clear of.

First, avoid metal benches at all costs. Aluminum, steel, and wrought iron absorb heat rapidly. After just an hour of direct sunlight, a dark metal bench can reach temperatures over 140°F (60°C). That’s enough to cause burns on bare legs.

Second, stay away from dark-colored plastic or recycled plastic lumber. While plastic benches are often marketed as low-maintenance, dark shades (black, dark green, dark brown) trap heat. They may not get as hot as metal, but on a 90°F day, they can still feel uncomfortably warm—like sitting on a heated car seat.

Third, avoid solid concrete or stone benches without a coating. Stone looks beautiful and stays cool in the shade, but in full sun, granite or limestone can radiate stored heat for hours. You might not feel the burn instantly, but you’ll definitely notice the discomfort after five minutes.

Now, what should you choose? Look for light-colored or natural-toned wooden benches made from cedar, teak, or recycled composite materials with light pigments. These materials reflect sunlight rather than absorb it. Also consider benches with slatted designs—they allow air to circulate, reducing heat buildup. For metal fans, some manufacturers offer powder-coated aluminum with a light “cool roof” coating that reflects UV rays. Alternatively, place your bench under a tree or shade structure. Even the best material will stay cooler out of direct sun.

In short: to avoid a seat that sizzles, skip metal, dark plastic, and bare stone. Go for light wood or reflective composite, and always think about placement. Your skin—and your afternoon relaxation—will thank you.
