Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are there any urban benches with backs that are high enough for tall people to rest their heads?

Let’s be honest: if you are tall, you’ve probably had that frustrating moment in a park where you try to lean back and rest your head—only to hit a narrow wooden slat or find the backrest ends right at your shoulder blades. It’s not comfortable, and it’s not relaxing.

Most standard urban benches are designed for an average height of about 5’8” to 5’10”. That means if you’re 6’3” or taller, your head will likely hover in the air above the backrest, completely unsupported. So, are there any benches that actually work for tall people? The answer is yes, but you have to know where to look.

First, many newer city parks and public squares are installing “ergonomic” benches with taller, curved backrests. Some modern steel and wood designs have a back height of 28 to 32 inches, which allows a person up to 6’4” to rest the back of their head comfortably. For example, the “Boum” bench by Landscape Forms or the “Solas” bench by Streetlife USA both offer extended back support.

Second, look for “leaning” or “lounge” style benches. These often have a partial back or a wide angled shape that supports the head even if the backrest isn’t traditionally tall. Some picnic table hybrids with high backs are also surprisingly good for tall people.

Third, check out benches with adjustable or modular seating in certain urban plazas. In cities like San Francisco, Seattle, and New York, designers have started including “long-stay” seating with higher backs and armrests that accommodate taller frames. You’ll find these in modern transportation hubs, libraries, and recently redesigned public squares.

If you are planning to buy a bench for your own private space, brands like Polywood (model N77 or N78) and Trex Outdoor Furniture make high-back benches that can accommodate up to 6’6” with proper neck support.

So, don’t give up on outdoor comfort just because you’re tall. The next time you stroll through a well-designed park, look for a bench with a back that rises past your shoulders. Lean back, close your eyes, and let your head finally rest.
