Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do you ship a heavy street bench—do I need a forklift to unload it?

Shipping a heavy street bench isn’t like ordering a small package from Amazon. If you’ve ever bought one, you probably realized quickly: these things are solid, often weighing 200 to 600 pounds or more. So, the big question: do you need a forklift to unload it? The short answer is: not necessarily, but it depends on where it’s being delivered and how it’s packed.

First, let’s talk about how heavy benches are typically shipped. Most sellers or manufacturers send them via freight LTL (Less Than Truckload), meaning the bench will come on a wooden pallet, shrink-wrapped, and often strapped down for safety. The freight truck driver is responsible for bringing the shipment to your curb or driveway—not for moving it inside or to your backyard.

If you have a loading dock or a commercial receiving area, the truck might have a liftgate. A liftgate is a hydraulic platform at the back of the truck that lowers your pallet to the ground safely. In this case, you do not need a forklift—just a pallet jack or some strong help to move the bench off the pallet.

But what if you don’t have a liftgate? Some smaller freight companies offer “tailgate delivery” only, meaning the driver will help you lower the pallet with a liftgate for an extra fee. If you skip that option, you might end up with a “curbside delivery,” where the driver simply drops the pallet off the back and leaves you to figure out how to move it.

So, let’s answer the question plainly: if you’re having the bench delivered to a residential address without a liftgate on the truck, then yes—you will need either a forklift, a pallet jack, a hand truck, or at least two strong people to carefully slide the bench off the pallet and move it. Many people rent a forklift for one day or hire a local moving crew for $100–$200 just for the unloading part.

A practical tip: before ordering, ask the supplier how the bench will be shipped. If it’s fully assembled on a pallet, you’re looking at a much heavier load than if it’s shipped in parts (some benches come flat-packed). You can also request “liftgate service” and “inside delivery” for an extra charge—this makes the process much easier for a home user.

Also, think about the final location. If you’re placing the bench in a park or backyard that’s far from the driveway, you’ll want to bring the pallet as close as possible with the trailer or forklift. A 600-pound bench can’t be carried by two people over grass for 50 feet.

In short: you don’t always need a forklift, but you do need a plan. If you have a liftgate or delivery crew, you’re fine. If you’re going solo to the curb, you’ll want a pallet jack or at least a couple of strong friends. Always confirm delivery details with the seller before you commit—and never assume the driver will help you move it into your backyard. Plan ahead, and that heavy street bench will find its perfect spot without breaking your back.
