Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I prevent squirrels from chewing on a wooden park bench?

If you have a wooden park bench in your yard or garden, you might have noticed those little acrobats—squirrels—treating it like their personal chew toy. Their gnawing not only damages the wood but can also ruin the bench’s appearance over time. Don’t worry; you don’t have to trap or harm them. Here are a few practical, humane ways to keep your bench safe.

First, understand why they chew. Squirrels constantly gnaw to keep their teeth sharp and filed down. Wood is a natural choice for them. The key is to make your bench less appealing or less accessible.

One of the most effective methods is applying a taste deterrent. Look for a commercial squirrel repellent that contains capsaicin (the active component in chili peppers). Spray it on the bench according to the instructions. The taste is unpleasant to squirrels but harmless. Reapply after rain or every few weeks. You can also make your own by mixing water with a few tablespoons of cayenne pepper—just test it on a hidden spot first to ensure it doesn’t stain the wood.

Another solid approach is to create a physical or sensory barrier. Try covering the bench with a lightweight netting or chicken wire, especially if you’re not using it for a few days. If you want something less obtrusive, apply a coat of smooth, high-gloss varnish or polyurethane. Squirrels find it harder to get a grip on smooth surfaces, and the hard finish makes the wood less chewable.

You can also distract them. Place a squirrel feeder filled with corn or nuts a little ways away from the bench. If they have an easier, tastier snack option, they may lose interest in the wood. Just make sure the feeder is far enough that they don’t treat the bench as a runway to get to it.

Finally, keep the bench clean. Food spills, salt from sweat, or even natural oils from your hands can attract squirrels. Wipe it down regularly with a mild soap and water solution, and rinse thoroughly.

Remember, consistency is key. You might need to alternate between methods or reapply repellents over a season. With a little patience, you can keep your wooden bench looking great while letting the squirrels enjoy their backyard too.
