Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

My kids want to sit on a street bench while waiting for the bus—are there shorter models for children?

It’s a super common scene: you’re standing at the bus stop with your little ones, and they immediately eye the bench. “Can we sit?” they ask. But the standard street bench is often too tall for small legs—their feet dangle, and they can’t get on or off safely. As a parent, you might wonder: are there shorter models designed specifically for children?

The short answer is yes, but they aren’t as widespread as you might hope. Most public street benches are built for adults (around 17–19 inches in seat height). However, child-friendly bench models do exist, especially in parks, schools, and some busier transit stops designed with families in mind.

Where to find shorter benches:

- Park and playground benches: Many parks install junior-sized benches around 12–14 inches high. These are perfect for kids and often placed near playgrounds or walking paths.

- Custom public seating: Some cities have begun installing “bus stop buddy” benches that are slightly lower or have a footrest bar so kids can sit more naturally.

- Adjustable or modular benches: A few innovative designs allow seat height to be changed (some even have a second lower seat built in).

What if there’s no child-sized bench?

1. Portable folding stools: A small, lightweight stool (8–10 inches tall) that you can carry in a tote bag works great—just set it beside the larger bench so your child can sit securely.

2. Use the curb or a low wall: If safe and away from traffic, a clean, dry curb or low step can double as a mini seat.

3. Encourage standing (with breaks): Sometimes a short wait doesn’t justify a seat. Quick activities like standing on one foot, spotting different car colors, or gentle stretching keep them happy.

Safety first: Always check that the bench (or any alternative) is stable, not wobbly, and clear of sharp edges or splinters. If your child is very young, keep a hand on them, especially near a busy road.

So while dedicated shorter street benches aren’t common at every bus stop, you have smart workarounds—and more cities are becoming family-aware in their street furniture design. Until then, a simple folding stool can make your bus stop moments far more comfortable for your little one.
