Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

We’re putting in a few park benches by the playground—should I go with metal or recycled plastic?

When you’re adding park benches near a playground, the material you choose matters more than you might think. You want something that withstands weather, is safe for kids, and stays comfortable while your community enjoys the space for years to come. Metal and recycled plastic each have their strengths—here’s a down-to-earth comparison to help you decide.

First, consider durability. Metal benches—especially those made from powder-coated steel or aluminum—are tough. They resist vandalism and heavy impacts, making them a low-maintenance option if you worry about rough use. However, metal can get very hot in direct sunlight, which is a real issue right by a playground where children might sit or climb. In colder climates, metal can also become icy and uncomfortable. Recycled plastic benches, on the other hand, stay cool to the touch in summer and don’t rust or rot. They are more flexible, but they may not stand up to repeated abuse as well as metal. Over time, recycled plastic can fade or develop surface cracks if exposed to intense UV without stabilizers.

Next, think about comfort and safety. For a playground, safety is key. Recycled plastic has naturally rounded edges and won’t develop sharp burrs like metal might after some wear. It also doesn’t transfer heat as dramatically, so a child’s bare leg won’t get burned on a sunny day. Metal benches, while sturdy, may require cushioning or specially designed slatted surfaces to keep them safe. From a comfort perspective, recycled plastic often feels warmer and more welcoming—it almost mimics wood without the splinters.

Maintenance is another big factor. Metal benches need periodic painting or coating to prevent rust, especially if you’re near any saltwater or in a humid area. Grime can be wiped off easily, but scratches in the paint need prompt attention. Recycled plastic benches are essentially maintenance-free: just hose them down to clean them. They don’t need sealing, painting, or stain treatment, which can save you time and money long-term. However, if a recycled plastic bench does break—say from very heavy abuse—repairing it might mean replacing whole sections, whereas metal can sometimes be welded.

Environmental impact is worth weighing for many communities. Recycled plastic is made from post-consumer waste like bottles and bags, giving materials a second life. If you value green initiatives and want to demonstrate sustainability, this is a strong selling point. Metal benches, particularly those made from aluminum or high-recycled-content steel, also have eco-cred—metal is infinitely recyclable. But the production of new metal is more energy-intensive. For a playground setting where families are present, an eco-friendly choice often resonates well.

Finally, think about cost and lifespan quality. Metal benches often have a higher upfront cost but can last decades with proper care. Recycled plastic benches are generally more affordable initially and promise about 15–25 years of service depending on exposure. If your budget is tight but you want a good-looking, low-fuss option, recycled plastic wins. If you need something truly bulletproof that won’t fade or wear quickly even in extreme sun, metal might be the better long-term bet.

In short: go with recycled plastic if comfort for children, low maintenance, and eco-friendliness top your list. Choose metal if maximum durability and vandal-resistance matter most, and you’re willing to manage the heat and upkeep. Either way, both materials will outlast wood and keep your playground bench area looking tidy for years. Take a walk around your park, picture where they’ll be, and ask yourself who’s using them most—the answer usually points you to the right choice.
