Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I level a park bench on a sloped lawn without digging?

Hey there! I totally get the struggle—you’ve got this beautiful park bench you want to place on a sloped lawn, but digging holes feels like a huge hassle (or you just don’t want to mess up the grass). The good news? You can absolutely level it without digging. Here’s how I’d do it in a few simple, no-dig steps.

First, assess the slope. Place the bench where you want it and see how much it tilts. If it’s just a slight lean, say an inch or two, the easiest trick is using adjustable bench feet—these are like little screw-on levelers that attach to the legs. You can twist them up or down to compensate for the slope. You can buy these at most hardware stores for around $10-$20 per set, and they’re a lifesaver. If you don’t want to buy anything, wooden or rubber shims work perfectly. Slide them under the low legs until the bench sits level. Just make sure they’re thick enough and weather-resistant (treated wood or outdoor rubber is best).

For a more permanent fix that’s still no-dig, try ground contact pads. These are flat, heavy-duty plastic or rubber squares (sometimes called "ground anchors") that you place directly on the grass. Put one under each leg, and if needed, stack a few on the lower side to raise the leg. They spread the weight so the bench doesn’t wobble or sink over time. No digging—just place and go.

If the slope is steeper, like 3-4 inches, combine methods. Use thicker shims or even a couple of paver stones (just set them on the grass, no digging) to create a raised platform for the lower legs. Then add adjustable feet or shims on top for micro-adjustments. Pro tip: always check level with a small spirit level across the seat, not the arms, since the seat’s flat plane is what matters for comfort.

One more thing: after leveling, give the bench a gentle shake. If it rocks, tweak the shims or feet until it’s solid. Over a few weeks, the legs might sink a bit into soft grass, so just re-adjust as needed. And if you want to protect the lawn, use the ground pads—they prevent leg marks.

That’s it! No digging, no heavy lifting, just a few clever tweaks. Your bench will be stable and comfortable, ready for those lazy afternoons. Give it a try—you’ll be sitting level in no time. Let me know if you run into any issues!
