Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do the slats on your wooden park benches connect—are they screwed or just nailed in?

When you sit on a wooden park bench, you might wonder: are those slats screwed in or just nailed? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all, but as a general rule, quality park benches use screws, not nails. Here’s why, and what to look for.

First, screws provide superior holding power. Over time, nails can loosen as wood expands and contracts with moisture and temperature changes. A bench with nailed slats will start to squeak, wobble, or even have slats pop off. Screws, especially outdoor-grade stainless steel or coated ones, resist rust and keep the slats snug even after years of rain and sunshine.

Second, screws make maintenance easier. If a slat gets damaged or rots, you can simply unscrew it and replace it without splitting the wood—a common problem when prying out nails. For park benches that face heavy public use, this repairability is a huge advantage.

But here’s the real-world truth: cheaper, budget-friendly benches (like those from big-box stores) sometimes use ring-shank nails to cut costs. These nails have ridges that grip the wood, but they still lack the long-term reliability of screws. Professional-grade benches, whether secured to the ground or not, almost always use coated or galvanized screws, often with a pre-drilled pilot hole to prevent splitting.

One exception: the cross braces beneath the slats might be nailed for quick assembly, but the slats themselves? Screws. If you’re checking your own bench, tilt it back and look underneath. A screw head will have a distinct cross or star pattern; a nail head will be smooth and round. And for safety, always choose screws—they’re the only way to guarantee your bench stays solid season after season.
