Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How much space should I leave between two outdoor benches for comfortable walking?

When arranging outdoor benches—whether in a garden, park, or on a patio—one of the most practical questions is: how much space should you leave between them so people can walk comfortably? Getting this right makes the difference between a smooth, natural flow and constant bumping into seats or squeezing through narrow gaps.

First, think about the typical width of a person walking. An average adult requires about 24 to 30 inches (60–75 cm) of clear space to walk comfortably without brushing against obstacles. But when benches are involved, you have to factor in a few more things: people’s shoulders, arms swinging naturally, and the fact that someone might be carrying a bag or walking side by side with another person.

For a single person to walk comfortably between two parallel benches (facing each other or arranged side by side), I recommend leaving at least 36 to 48 inches (90–120 cm) of clearance. This gives enough room for one person to pass without feeling cramped, and even allows for someone to pause and sit down without blocking the path.

If you expect two people to walk side by side, or if the benches are in a high-traffic area like a public park, increase the gap to 60 inches (150 cm) or more. This ensures easy passing and a relaxed, open feel. Also consider the bench depth—most benches are around 18 to 24 inches deep. So when measuring between them, measure from the front edge of one bench to the front edge of the other, not from the backrests.

Another scenario is when benches are placed end-to-end (like along a walkway). In that case, you still want about 36 inches between the ends of the benches to allow people to turn into or out of seats without squeezing. And if you’re placing benches back-to-back, leave a gap of at least 48 to 60 inches behind them, as people will be sitting with their legs extended and someone may need to walk behind.

In short: for comfortable walking between two outdoor benches, aim for a minimum of 36 inches (90 cm) of clear space, and go up to 48 inches or more if you anticipate two-way traffic or frequent use. Always test the spacing in person—sit on one bench, stand up, and walk through the gap. If you have to turn sideways, it’s too narrow. Your outdoor space should invite relaxation, not awkward navigation.
