Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are there any park benches that are designed to deter skateboarding tricks?

Yes, they absolutely exist, and you’ve probably sat on one without even realizing it. These are often referred to as “skate-deterrent” or “defensive” benches, and they’re a real-world example of what designers call “hostile architecture.” The goal isn’t to be mean to skaters, but to make the bench physically unsuitable for grinding, sliding, or ollie-ing onto.

If you look closely at public benches in many city parks, plazas, or bus stops, you’ll notice some common anti-skateboarding design features. The most obvious one is the use of metal armrests or dividers placed right in the middle of the bench. This breaks the continuous flat surface a skateboard needs to grind across. You’ll see these as single or double metal bars splitting the bench into individual seats.

Another common trick is adding small metal studs or buttons along the edge of the bench. These are deliberately uncomfortable to sit on, but their real purpose is to prevent a skateboard’s trucks from making contact with the edge. Without that smooth, uninterrupted edge, you can’t perform a grind trick. Some benches also use highly textured or ribbed concrete on the top edge, which will instantly slow down any board or ruin the surface for sliding.

Then there’s the curved or sloping design. A bench that arches slightly upward in the middle or slopes forward makes it very hard to balance or lock into a grind. Finally, some benches are built without a flat, accessible seat at all—like those that are just a single, sharp slab of granite.

So, yes. The next time you see a bench with those annoying central armrests or rough edges, you’re looking at a carefully designed piece of anti-skateboarding furniture. It’s a direct, physical answer to the question of how to keep public seating safe for everyone—even if it sometimes feels a little less comfortable for a quick nap.
