Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Do your street benches have a gloss or matte finish, and which lasts longer?

If you’re responsible for selecting or maintaining street benches, you’ve probably wondered: does the finish—gloss or matte—really affect how long the bench lasts? The short answer is that both finishes can be durable, but their longevity depends more on the coating system and environment than on the sheen level. Let’s break it down.

First, gloss finishes are typically achieved with a higher resin-to-pigment ratio in the paint or powder coating. This makes the surface smoother and harder, which can resist dirt and graffiti better. A high-quality gloss powder coat, for example, often has excellent UV resistance and won’t chalk or fade as quickly as some matte alternatives. However, gloss surfaces show scratches, chips, and fingerprints more easily—so in high-traffic areas, they might look worn sooner even though the coating is intact.

Matte finishes, in contrast, have a more textured surface that hides minor imperfections and everyday wear. This makes them popular for urban settings where benches see constant use. But matte coatings can sometimes be more porous, meaning they may absorb moisture, oil, and pollutants over time. In humid or coastal climates, this can lead to coating degradation faster than a gloss finish—unless the matte coating is a specialized, high-durability formulation (like a matte polyester powder coat used in marine environments).

So which lasts longer? In controlled tests, both can last 15–20 years if properly applied on galvanized steel or aluminum with a corrosion-resistant primer. But if I had to choose for maximum longevity in a public space, I’d lean toward a high-quality gloss powder coat on a properly prepared metal substrate. The reason: the denser, less porous surface offers better protection against moisture, UV, and chemical cleaning agents. That said, if visual aesthetics and low-maintenance appearance are your priority, a premium matte finish with added UV stabilizers can be an excellent choice—just expect to repaint or recoat a few years earlier than its gloss counterpart.

Finally, don’t forget installation location. Benches under trees (where sap and bird droppings are common) or near the ocean may need different finishes. For gloss, a clear topcoat can protect against scratches; for matte, a periodic wax or sealant can extend life. Whichever you choose, always ask the manufacturer for specific warranty and testing data—especially for UV stability and salt spray resistance. In real-world street conditions, a well-maintained bench with the right finish for its environment will outlast a poorly matched one every time.
