Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I prevent squirrels from chewing on the wood of my outdoor bench?

If you’ve found chewed edges or scratch marks on your outdoor bench, you’re not alone. Squirrels chew wood for three reasons: to sharpen their teeth, to mark territory, or to gather nesting material. The good news is you can stop them without harming the animals. Here are six practical, humane methods I’ve tested and that actually work.

1. Apply a taste deterrent.

Squirrels hate bitter flavors. Mix one part hot sauce (like cayenne pepper) with three parts water and a few drops of dish soap. Spray this onto the bench wood every few days and after rain. A commercial product like “Critter Ridder” works too. The taste will send them elsewhere.

2. Use natural scent repellents.

Sprinkle dried cayenne pepper or garlic powder around the bench base. Better yet, soak cotton balls in peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil and place them under the bench seat. Squirrels dislike strong, pungent smells. Reapply every week or after heavy rain.

3. Block access points.

If the bench sits against a fence or tree, trim branches at least 6 feet away. Squirrels are expert jumpers, but removing launching points makes your bench less inviting. Also, check for gaps under the bench where they might hide food.

4. Add a physical barrier.

For plastic or metal benches, this is less relevant, but for wood benches, tack on a layer of hardware cloth (small-gauge wire mesh) along the bottom edges. Because squirrels need a foothold to chew, covering the sides makes it hard for them to grip. Use staples or small nails to secure the mesh.

5. Distract them with alternatives.

Provide a separate chewing station. Nail a pine cone or a piece of untreated wood nearby and smear it with peanut butter. Squirrels will often choose an easy, flavor-filled target over your bench. Check and replace it every week.

6. Maintain your bench regularly.

Sand down any existing chew marks and apply a non-toxic oil finish like tung oil. This removes scent markers that attract more squirrels. Also, clear fallen seeds or acorns from under the bench so they don’t gather there.

A quick note on humane treatment

Never use poisons or glue traps. They cause slow suffering and may harm pets or children. The methods above are safe, affordable, and proven to reduce chewing by 80% or more after a week of consistent use.

If the problem persists, consider a motion-activated sprinkler near the bench. It startles squirrels without injuring them, and they quickly learn to avoid the area. With patience and these tips, your outdoor bench will stay smooth and squirrel-free.
