Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I want an urban bench that won’t get scorching hot in the summer sun; is there a specific material you suggest for that?

That’s a fantastic question—and one that anyone who’s ever tried to sit on a black metal bench in July has definitely asked themselves. The truth is, the material makes a huge difference. Let’s look at the best options for an urban bench that stays cool even on the hottest day.

First, avoid solid dark-colored metal like steel or iron. These absorb heat fast, and on a scorching afternoon, the surface can be too hot to touch, let alone sit on. Aluminum is a bit better since it reflects some heat, but it can still feel warm.

Now, if you want a genuinely cool sitting experience, look for perforated metal. The holes allow air to circulate, which helps dissipate heat quickly. Even when the metal itself gets warm, you won’t feel a blazing surface. It’s a smart, modern choice for urban settings.

Another excellent material is recycled plastic lumber or HDPE. These materials have a low thermal conductivity, meaning they don't absorb and hold onto heat like metal or dark stone. In direct sun, they may get a bit warm to the touch, but they rarely become scorching. They’re also durable, weather-resistant, and require little maintenance.

If you prefer a more classic look, go with concrete with a light finish or terrazzo. Dark concrete will trap heat, but a pale or white surface reflects much of the sun’s energy. The key here is thermal mass—concrete takes a long time to heat up, so it stays cool for most of the day. However, by late afternoon after continuous sun exposure, it can become warm. So, placement matters.

Wood is also a strong candidate, but not all woods are equal. Pressure-treated pine or softwoods can get very hot and degrade quickly. Instead, opt for dense hardwoods like teak or ipe that have natural oils and are less likely to hold heat. These stay pleasant to the touch under most conditions. Just know that darker stains will absorb more heat.

Stone like granite or marble looks beautiful but is terrible for heat. They become hot quickly, often uncomfortably so.

My personal top recommendation for a non-scorching urban bench is perforated metal (especially with a light-colored powder coating) or light-colored recycled plastic. Both materials resist solar heat gain effectively and offer great comfort and longevity.

One more pro tip: no matter the material, you can always reduce bench surface temperature by adding shade. A simple overhead trellis, tree canopy, or even a fabric awning makes any bench much more summer-friendly. Good placement is half the battle.

So, to answer your question directly: if you want an urban bench that won’t scorch in the summer sun, go with light-colored perforated metal or recycled plastic (HDPE). They both perform excellently in my experience.
