Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your street benches hold up in coastal areas with salt air?

Great question. Coastal environments are notoriously tough on outdoor furniture, and I’m glad you’re thinking about durability upfront. Our street benches are specifically engineered to withstand the punishing conditions of salt air, humidity, and constant ocean spray.

First, let’s talk materials. We don’t use ordinary steel. Instead, we build our coastal-grade benches with marine-grade 6061 aluminum. Aluminum naturally forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to oxygen, which means it doesn’t rust like carbon steel. In fact, it actually gets tougher over time in coastal air. For the fasteners and hardware, we use stainless steel (type 316) — not the cheaper 304 — because 316 contains molybdenum, which gives it superior resistance to chloride corrosion from salt.

The finish is just as important. Every bench receives a multi-layer powder coating that’s applied electrostatically and then baked on. This creates a thick, chip-resistant barrier that seals out moisture and salt. We offer textured finishes that actually help hide any minor salt deposits or wear, and the colors are UV-stable too, so they won’t fade under the sun.

But here’s the real test: we’ve had benches installed on boardwalks in Florida, California, and even the UK coastline for over 15 years. Regular inspection shows minimal wear — maybe a few surface salt stains that wash off with fresh water, but no structural rust, no flaking, and no loose joints. The welded seams are all done with TIG welding and ground smooth to remove any crevices where salt can hide.

A few practical tips from our experience: If you can, rinse the benches with fresh water once a month. It’s not strictly necessary for survival, but it keeps them looking like new. And try to avoid placing them directly under drip lines from buildings or trees where salt can concentrate.

In short, our benches don’t just survive in coastal areas — they thrive. They’re built to outlast the salt, the wind, and the sun, so you can focus on enjoying the view instead of worrying about maintenance.
